It seems like a really promising start, but is hasn't really been touched for a while.

I think it could be a really cool system for a small group to do car sharing, or organizing a group of people with multible means of transportation. Kind of a private Uber ;)

The real-time location sharing is already there, so all it would probably need is some interface improvements and maybe a way to send real-time notifcations to a mobile app (simplest would be probably a XMPP or Telegram bot).

I'm glad you find Rendezvous useful, and I also would love to see someone continue its development. These days I am personally more interested in working on the Nextcloud Maps app, which is being led by the same person who created PhoneTrack which is an app I've been using for almost a year and have really enjoyed.

What I'd really like to see is someone bridge the gap between the federated access control already supported by Nextcloud (alice@alice.com can seamlessly share files with bob@bob.com) and fully nomadic identity (Alice's file share is also automatically accessible to Bob's clone bob@backupbob.com on an independent Nextcloud server). There would be more of a push for this capability if enough people had Nextcloud accounts that they even considered sharing files that way. The first thing a Nextcloud user thinks when they want to share files is "What is the email address of the recipient so I can send them a public link (possibly secured with a password that I have to tell them somehow, probably in the same email)?" If enough people used Nextcloud, they would instead first try typing in the recipient's federated ID (charlie@cloud.charlie.org) in the "Share" dialog, and if it were fully nomadic, the file would be available to all Charlie's clones securely and automagically.

@Andrew Yes, PhoneTrack is an really usefull app, and I hope Nextcloud maps will be too. But due to the setup of Nextcloud it is more useful for permanent tracking, or maybe car fleet management of some sort.

The Hubzilla app seems to be more geared towards short transinient location sharing maybe linked to the event calendar system. Setting up something like this is a hassle in PhoneTrack if it is only used for a few hours at most.

You are right. My personal use case that drove the development of Rendezvous was the desire for an ad hoc group of friends or family to share their locations during some particular event. Maybe you are driving to meet a friend and you want them to see where you are so they don't have to text or call you to ask if you are almost there. Maybe a group of four friends go to a crowded music concert and split up to see different performances and want to rendezvous somewhere for lunch afterward: even if they don't agree where to meet beforehand and even if there are not clear landmarks, they can place a marker on the map and the others will see it.

@Andrew exactly stuff like that, although of course if it was integrated in a mobile app it would probably work somewhat better than in a mobile browser or the Nomad webview app.

I found these interesting addons for the ejabbered XMPP server:

That would basically allow linking the Hubzilla database (where I assume Rendevous also stores the location data) with an XMPP client for real-time location sharing via a mobile app.

aTalk for example already utilizes a very similar system, but with a google maps backend:

But I am sure other xmpp clients could be extended (including the conversejs webclient that in included in the outdated Hubzilla XMPP addon).
