hi-
post can ex- and imported to an new hub

the hzfiles addon helps to move fotos and files to an new hub.

But what about PM/Mail - stared Posts and post which are marked and saved in folders – is there a way to copy this informations also?

There is no specific function to export only starred or filed posts. Typically we only export your own content and not content belonging to other people. This would probably not be difficult to add.

now if I want to transfer my account to an other hub it would be nice not to lose all the PM/Mails .

so with

/uexport/basic?sections=mail

I can exported the mails

If I try to import them by

/import_items

does not work

If i now go to /mail/combined it even seamed to trashed the view...

mail is one of the sections automatically provided by the basic channel export. You can import it using /import .

ok - because of gadway 504 error i just imprteted the basic channel information by /import

than I exported on the old hub with the export addon packages just for every month and imported this smaler packages by /import_items on the new hub
this did work well for all the posts but all Mails are missing.

Have a look at the file created by exporting just the mail section. If it doesn't contain any mail the problem is likely with the original server. If it is not imported correctly, the problem is likely with the clone server.

just did some testing - all over

/uexport/basic?sections=mail

works fine -mails are exported

but the .json files by

/uexport/complete

and

/uexport/201x/y

DON`T contain any mails - just posts

just for understanding

i want to make an exact copy of my account on an other hub... i have a lot of
starred and filed posts - Now I don´t want to copy content which belongs to other people – I just want transfer the information for the links to this content to the new hub.

Is this function implemented or not?
While I tried – just one starred post showed up at the new hub.

this works great, thank you! i had been thinking to do that myself because image display was one of the things that got on my nerves with Hz, but now, the overlay for normal photos and the album viewer are both good. i'll look at the code to figure out how you did it, but have a pretty good idea already.

I've known VMs to drift up to ten minutes in the course of a day, depending on how loaded the host is.

I would like to share with you the idea for /apps page I had in mind when I first heard of the new change prior 3.8.
I think this aproach UX and UI wise is more clear and simple.

By putting the icons from "Manage apps" page in the tiles and changing the button to lead to "Arrange apps" page instead, we would also remove unnecessary step and menu item. In this way everything that has to do with apps would be contained in one place.
While doing the quick mockup I realized that there isnt anywhere any descriptions of what the apps do. I think a description should be mandatory for all apps otherwise its hard to people to know what they actually are. For example we assume people know what "ActivityPub" or "Diaspora" is. While coming up with explanations for the mockup I realized that myself I am not 100% sure what "Articles" really does and I couldn't find any info about it anywhere either. I assume what it does, but that's just my guess.

What do you guys think about this?

One minor problem I have noticed, it does not seem intuitive to click 'available apps' to locate and install new apps. (And update).
After you install, you have to go back to installed apps to set icon in hamburgler menu and nav bar.

Its not terrible but i think it could be streamlined a little.

I am not convinced yet about the two column layout. It might give you grieve on mobile phones. Also what @Waitman Gobble mentioned should be addressed imho.

Regarding the description: the .apd files can have a description field. iirc it should be desc: some description. It's not implemented in any app yet but the code to parse it is there.

I think beside a new layout we must think thoroughly about how to achieve a straightforward workflow in app handling: which buttons should be visible in an extra layer only (edit button?) to prevent excessive demands and frustration for the not so technical people...

Great to hear about description. I'm sure some folks around will be happy to contribute with descriptions.
As for the two column layout for mobile it should definitely turn into 1 column, just like on screens with bigger real e-state it should use the space 4+ columns. Basically with introduced description, having three columns (as it currently is, on typical screen seems too crumbed)

And yeah we should have larger discussion as to how to properly layout the entire apps section. Indeed throwing everything onto one page might be too much, but spreading it over multiple separate pages might have same consequences. Is there any workflows/procedures on how to facilitate such process within the hubzilla community?

The reason why we don't use the app description is because it cannot be easily/automatically translated.

The apps interface used to resemble the apps interface on a phone (which is what I designed it for originally) and originally we could fit 20-30 on the screen at a time. Now we can fit like 6 - even on a desktop box with quad monitors. If it's a single column you're probably down to 3-4. Now I'm not a UI guy and people always dislike the UI stuff I come up with, so I'll just mention that I don't see this as a positive trend.

The problem now from normal user perspective, especially that we now give them the freedom to assemble the feature set themselfs, is no information as to what those apps do. We assume everyone knows what they do, and I learned personally (when creating that mockup) that even I dont know what really Articles apps does. We do need to find a way where people do not have to base their understanding of what certain feature does based on assumption or have to dig through scattered documentation hoping to find something. For example, nextcloud apps has similar list. The items consist screenshot, title, description, enabled/disable button, score. Depending on the screen size it also changes the amount of columns to fit enough information

Also because of the amount of information that would probably obscure the view, extra information about the app (links to website, git issues, full description etc) is unfolded upon click on the app tile:

Yeah, the Nextcloud example is actually better as it also scales to mobile devices (grid stacks on top each other). It's also not like you would use this menu to start apps.
That is kind of not working to well in Nextcloud is the categories. They never quite fit and are also confusing. A better search engine and easy to view tags would probably be better.

Yeah categories in nextcloud arent very intuitive (i think hubzilla is better at that already) but my point was more the ui layout.

As for my argument about assuming users know what apps mean and do, example for few minutes ago.
I asked a friend of mine (not tech savvy) what does he think the ActivityPub app in hubzilla is for. He says "Oh. It's like this other spying things like facebook and others have that monitors and sends your activities while logged in to the server." and then he adds "Nice that in hubzilla you can easily switch it off.." :|

IMAO a better interface would be for the "App Store" (i.e. apps/available) to load an app information page (perhaps with ratings and comments) when clicked. It "sort of" does this now but really only loads the description built into the app and only if the app has a built-in description and only if you haven't already installed it.

A more comprehensive "App Store" brings with it a slew of other issues which is why we opted for something more manageable. An "App Store" is basically a full-blown project on its own and it isn't obvious how one would decentralise such a thing. In case you haven't yet noticed, Hubzilla is big on providing innovative decentralised solutions to common problems.

So on the short term - or until somebody wants to commit to providing a full-featured decentralised "App Store" app, I might suggest an 'i' or '?' (info) button on the installed apps page to tell you a bit more about what apps you have.

i do agree that if you want full blown app store its a bag of problems,implementations and maintenance in of itself. i dont think my suggestions are this. all i suggest is adding desctiption to the main view so that someone can easily on first glance see what the app does. i think from usability perspective it does not hinder anything and only improves it. hiding basic information behind yet another button/page is making the process more hidden, and complex. would be good in case the app provides much more informarion (including for example howto or links to howtos etc) to have that under the extra 'i' button.

i think having a situation where there is no information at all is not solving problem.

i do speak with a lot of people about hubzilla and its potential and everyone agrees hubzilla is awesome piece of software, but it is hard to find your way around. i think small improvents on already briliant base like adding descriptions and perhaps streamlining things so you avoid extra pages when things could be done on one page could be beneficial and yet not change the way hubzilla operates too much. its tweaks and improvements of the existing stuff rather then rewritting stuff from scratch.

i want to work on more of a POC but first wanted to share the general idea and gather some feedback on this. also wanted to know/see how this kind of suggestions/ideas are discussed within the community and what are the precesses (if any) as to decissions on whether or not implement suggestion 'A' or 'B'.

as for translations, at disroot we have dedicated team that would love to jump in and write missing descriptions and we could easily translate those to polish, spanish, portuguesse, italian, german, dutch, french and probably few extra languages along the way.

@muppeth as @Mike Macgirvin pointed out, you can see a short description of an app if the app is not installed and you click the app icon. That could be a starting point for app descriptions in the apd files.

Some of the apps are enabled by default (like the home, network, directory etc) when new channel is created. Could someone point me to place where this is done? I really would like to find an easy way to setup set of pre-defined apps. I think as hubmin being able to do that would make life easier and I see I'm not alone in the need for it.

@{md42@zot.social} is doing great job with defaultapps, but I think using it to set the provisioning defaults feels like a hack. Defaultapp is there to set defaults that shouldn't change per service_class and its a great tool to achieve that.

I think a smart thing to do is make this pluggable by adding a plugin hook. Will do this right now, but it could be some time before this filters down to a production release.

Oh hang on - a plugin isn't actually necessary. You would need to set config system.base_apps to your desired base apps list (array). You can do this in .htconfig.php and over-ride the default list

PROTIP: When you have multiple installations of various revisions of the same system and you are reviewing logs for errors that have been reported - - - make double, triple and quadruple sure that you're actually looking at the logs on the RIGHT installation - especially if you don't see the reported error in the logs, and the report comes from a very reputable source.

On the plus side - you'll finally be seeing some MR notices shortly...

Hi people! Since Vilarejo Pro hub was active since the first version of RedMatrix, I choose to reinstall it from zero, following master branch of git, instead of dev. I'm hoping we'll be more stable now.

And I have two questions about the actual Hubzilla version. First, I noticed that we have the "Addons" and the "App store" and that there are some itens that exists on both. What do I have do to? Activate them in both? Or choose one of them?

Second, I configured the initial page as pubstream, but I'm receiving this message when I try to access it:

Public Stream App (Not Installed):
The unmoderated public stream of this hub

In Apps, I already installed the "Stream" app available, but it's linked to my network page. Is there any other thing I need to do?

Things need to be enabled/installed in 2 places. (1) In the Admin interface which makes them available to users (2) in the "Apps" store for each channel to activate them for that particular channel.

The PubStream error appears to indicate that you have done (1) but not (2) for that particular channel.

Well, now I understood. I was mislead by the warning message that appeared on admin, where it was shown that some addons migrated to apps. Now I understand that apps are linked to channels. Thank you M. Dent.

And the pubstream error was my fault. I was looking for it on addons and it's on site settings. It's ok now.

And just another question. When I activate the public stream, does it add those posts from the matrix to my database or just show them?
