System maintenance for official zot pages

Within the coming days I will do a maintenance of the server hosting zotlabs.org, hubzilla.org and start.hubzilla.org.
I will temporarily move zotlabs.org / hubzilla.org to another server, which will shorten the unavailability. These domains will be unavailable during the moves, but I'll keep them up.

I expect start.hubzilla.org may be down for a few days, I will still need to see if I have got the resources to move it. I will at least set up an info page.
Besides, I am still pondering closing it down completely as I do no longer feel comfortable hosting such an open public hub. If you would like to step in, please raise your hand.
But I will make a separate announcement for that, in order to give everyone the chance to clone away.
I will comment on this thread as I get going, I just want you to know in advance there will be some disruption.
I am combining this with a complete restructure of my private servers etc, therefore right now I only want to say: within the coming days. May be tomorrow (no, don't think so) or next week. I still want to enjoy my vacation. :)

Just an update. I have not done this yet, even though I want to. But as of now I am on mobile only. While this has not been much of an issue quite often, this time the connection is often quite miserable. Sometimes I can work OK but then all of a sudden I have got no reception at all.
I do not want our sites to be left in limbo, therefore I refrain from this long planned maintenance work right now.
On the upside I have streamlined my action plan and simplified everything, no site move should be required and everything should be back up and running after just a few hours. If I am confident enough to do it.

We suggest you pay attention to the themes of our hub:

ussrbasic - default 3 column theme

ussrbasicpub - public theme with static informative navbar

(theme for public channel with /siteinfo icon)

ussrbasicleft - 2 column, left navigation

ussrbasicright - 2 column, right navigation

Those based on last redbasic theme with additional "Nolikes" (hidden “Likes” feature) and "Nominus" schemes (hidden “Minus” icon under one-side connections).

Use and modify these themes freely. Installation instructions for hub administrators:
Navigate to your hub web root
root@hub:/root# cd /var/www
Add the theme repo and give it a name
root@hub:/var/www# util/add_theme_repo https://dev.ussr.win/ussr/ussr-hubzilla-themes.git ussrbasicthemes
Update the repo by using
root@hub:/var/www# util/update_theme_repo ussrbasicthemes

Could some minor modifications to the IRC addon be made now that Freenode has switched to the much nicer KiwiIRC client?

It certainly is a whole lot better, but also uses space much less efficiently, so maybe it would be good to add an option in Hubzilla to put the IRC window into full screen like it can be done with the wiki?
Is it possible to hide the sidebars by default for apps?

1. any chance to have a share button that sends a nice link to the KiwiIRC webchat with the channel preconfigured so that you can easily invite people in the Fediverse to an IRC chat you are participating in?
2. I can't find an option for users to configure their own bookmarks. Only the admin seems to be able to configure the popular channels in the side bar?

How to include Hubzilla Site homepage to show visitors?

In the #Hubzilla admin UI, one can configure the site homepage which one wants to show to visitors (default: login box), where I read as examples:

example: 'pubstream' to show public stream, 'page/sys/home' to show a system webpage called 'home' or 'include:home.html' to include a file.

The two first examples worked for me. I just tried the last example for the first time, without any success. The location of the home.html file which I would like to include is the same as the location of the hub root (In my case "/var/www/html"). What am I doing wrong?

Edit: In order to find the problem, I tried again the first two examples, because the last time I tried them was long time ago. Unfortunately, they don't work neither now. Which means that the old set configuration is not overwritten when changing the setting over the UI. Is this maybe related to an update?

I wanted to be sure and checked in phpmyadmin: Any changing (for example pubstream or include:home.html) of the configuration is saved properly in the database.
The changement just has no effect on the landing page for visitors: When accessing the base url of the server as a not logged in person, it always shows page/info/home, which was my configuration for the last several months. I'm wondering if there is another location where this setting could be stored and which overwrites the setting which is in the database? Or maybe it has to do with browser history and cache? I deleted all history and cache, without any effect. Or is there a lagging mechanism in the software for applying this setting?

@Mike Macgirvin I found the problem. It was indeed a conflict with an addon. I had the addon customhome installed. By uninstalling it, the problem was gone. Thanks again for your help

As a developper, could you please check if it's best to remove the addons customhome and startpage from the code, in order to get rid of the set up conflicts of the start page (see Mikes comment above)? Thank you

And what do you think about adding an option to the Zotlabs/Module/Home.php in order to be able to load:home.html (to load a homepage without the navbar, see discussion above)? That would be great.

Is there a way to download multiple files from the #Hubzilla #cloud web UI /cloud (for example all files in a folder, without zipping them)? I know, via webdav it's possible, but some users on my hub find connecting via webdav not intuitive or too complicated

Good question! - I had the same problem, and found no way to download a folder (like e.g. Dropbox) , so I zipped it on my own and uploaded that too.

right, I was talking about a solution for non-technically inclined people. For example you have a complete artist dossier in a Hubzilla cloud folder, with portfolio, video materials, several dozens of photos and so on. You are embedding the files individually in your hubzilla posts, cards, articles and so on. You are presenting the photos with the Hubzilla gallery. And now, you want to provide a convinient download link for the whole folder to a event organizer who needs all these files to work with it for making advertisement, flyers, ...
Or you are having a temporal collaboration project with 5 people. 2 are having a channel on your hub, 3 are not. You need to have a central cloud for all your project material, let's say 30 to 50 files of different types. You create a cloud for that on your hub, since you don't want to use google drive or dropbox. You create a guest access token for the 3 external people. In order to do their work, each project member needs to download a part of the files (let's say about 20 files). The external people access the files only through Web UI (It seems connecting via webdav client doesn't work with the guest access token)

On /webpages/, there's a UI for exporting the webpage elements. There, one can individually check which elements one wants to export, or one toggles all elements (choosing on/off). The export there is offered also as a zip format. I think the same UI could be a solution for the cloud. @Daniel, I see the problem with the size of the files. What would be the size limit, what do you think?

It is displayed individually, according to the observers hub url and the observers webfinger. The syntax for it is [observer.baseurl]/webpages/[observer.name]

Yeah, copy-paste messes me up all the time - especially if I'm cutting/pasting between files in vim. (Not an excuse as much as something for others to keep in mind and a reminder to myself to double check my check-ins).

It seems like a really promising start, but is hasn't really been touched for a while.

I think it could be a really cool system for a small group to do car sharing, or organizing a group of people with multible means of transportation. Kind of a private Uber ;)

The real-time location sharing is already there, so all it would probably need is some interface improvements and maybe a way to send real-time notifcations to a mobile app (simplest would be probably a XMPP or Telegram bot).

I'm glad you find Rendezvous useful, and I also would love to see someone continue its development. These days I am personally more interested in working on the Nextcloud Maps app, which is being led by the same person who created PhoneTrack which is an app I've been using for almost a year and have really enjoyed.

What I'd really like to see is someone bridge the gap between the federated access control already supported by Nextcloud (alice@alice.com can seamlessly share files with bob@bob.com) and fully nomadic identity (Alice's file share is also automatically accessible to Bob's clone bob@backupbob.com on an independent Nextcloud server). There would be more of a push for this capability if enough people had Nextcloud accounts that they even considered sharing files that way. The first thing a Nextcloud user thinks when they want to share files is "What is the email address of the recipient so I can send them a public link (possibly secured with a password that I have to tell them somehow, probably in the same email)?" If enough people used Nextcloud, they would instead first try typing in the recipient's federated ID (charlie@cloud.charlie.org) in the "Share" dialog, and if it were fully nomadic, the file would be available to all Charlie's clones securely and automagically.

@Andrew Yes, PhoneTrack is an really usefull app, and I hope Nextcloud maps will be too. But due to the setup of Nextcloud it is more useful for permanent tracking, or maybe car fleet management of some sort.

The Hubzilla app seems to be more geared towards short transinient location sharing maybe linked to the event calendar system. Setting up something like this is a hassle in PhoneTrack if it is only used for a few hours at most.

You are right. My personal use case that drove the development of Rendezvous was the desire for an ad hoc group of friends or family to share their locations during some particular event. Maybe you are driving to meet a friend and you want them to see where you are so they don't have to text or call you to ask if you are almost there. Maybe a group of four friends go to a crowded music concert and split up to see different performances and want to rendezvous somewhere for lunch afterward: even if they don't agree where to meet beforehand and even if there are not clear landmarks, they can place a marker on the map and the others will see it.

I found these interesting addons for the ejabbered XMPP server:

That would basically allow linking the Hubzilla database (where I assume Rendevous also stores the location data) with an XMPP client for real-time location sharing via a mobile app.

aTalk for example already utilizes a very similar system, but with a google maps backend:

But I am sure other xmpp clients could be extended (including the conversejs webclient that in included in the outdated Hubzilla XMPP addon).

If you installed Hubzilla via git and running master branch, you are only a git checkout 4.4RC away from the next major Hubzilla release. Make sure to also git checkout 4.4RC the addons if you decide to join the release candidate testing.

You are invited to provide feedback in form of bug reports or merge requests on issues you might find.

You can follow the progress of release candidate testing in this wiki. Please PM me for wiki write-access if desired.

For the changelog please have a look at the git history for now.
A condensed summary will follow with the Hubzilla 4.4 release announcement.

I don't think we have that function itself. And there's no way really to know if a 3rd party is logged in since "login" is determined by the existence of browser cookies - and there's no way to know if a given 3rd browser has a valid cookie. So, I think we've relied on "local_channel()".

I guess maybe a little more context?

The online status is still available. This comes from the chat app iirc and is not very reliable...

Would it be running as part of a web request from the logged-in channel?  That is would "local_channel()" fit the bill?  Or  is this something being stored by a process kicked off through some other mechanism?

If it's another mechanism, I'm not exactly sure how you would determine the user is "logged-in".  I suppose you could set something in pconfig like "last_seen" with a datestamp that updates with each interaction.  If that's not more than _x_ seconds in the past, assume the user is "logged in" still.

I don't think we want to maintain a permanent connection with the server, as that could be resource intensive.  Maybe update last_seen as part of Zotlabs/Modules/Ping.php? (This appears to be the approach of the chatpresence routines).

Those are my quick answers.

It seems something wrong with permissions presets for channel role as forum.
I have selected "Forum - Mostly public"

but in participant connections list permissions not shown required for interaction with forum channel.

I wonder what it might be. Any ideas?

I just successfully created one more forum-channel. With new one all looks as it should. Very strange.

It looks like this related to cloning. I created forum clone at other hub connection made after got wrong premissions as shown on 2nd screenshot. Then I have removed clone and recreated connection and permissions were returned to correct values.
It seems we need more tests on this.

who is it that defines what is inherited and what is not? In theory it should not depend on the existence of the clone.
