Has anybody developed or published a list of the various icons in use within the project and described their meanings in different contexts? It could be a great resource both for devs to maintain consistency and for new users to help get them used to what things mean. With many of the advanced features of Hubzilla and the other Zotlabs projects, it can be easy to miss some important nuances about the platform because you THINK you know what things mean.

Creating a list like this doesn't necessarily require the ability to read or write code. It might be a fun task for someone a little bit new to the project to dig in and see some of the cool stuff available here and nowhere else!

I like your idea. We even can extend it to something like "Hubzilla style book" with icons, fonts and so on usage descriptions in different contexts.

Certainly it would be possible to extend it. I singled out icons (and perhaps I would add status and error messages to the list of priority items) because these are the main avenue that the software communicates with the user.

The recent discussion about the "lock" icon and distribution through public forums is a case in point. Some of the confusion could possibly have been reduced if there was a page that had all of the icons along with explanations that could be referred to in such instances. Without an express statement about "how we do things" - we leave it up to the user to interpret and make assumptions.

I don't think we can avoid the fact that "Hubzilla does things differently." And I don't think we should apologize for it or need to defend every difference between Hubzilla and "all the other packages out there".

At the same time, we should be reasonable and make our use of terminology and icons internally consistent and when it is possible, make them consistent with what users have already been trained to think when they encounter certain terms and images. Where that isn't possible, there should be a ready reference so people can at least easily find out what WE mean by those things.

It would also help us to figure out which (if any) images and icons should be injected through the code itself, and which can/should be put in templates and be made changeable by admins and addon developers.

Finally, it would allow addon developers to maintain consistency with the other aspects of Hubzilla as well.

It turns out the code is not plugable because session init is called before load_hooks().

I suggest to implement this patch into core as suggested by @Mark Nowiasz in this case.

About two months ago we started to implement zot6 to the dev branch of Hubzilla. We asked you to stop updating your dev branch at this point or alternatively switch to master.

I am happy to announce that most of this work has been completed.

If you are brave and know how to deal with issues or have been using dev branch before, you may update to current dev branch again now.

Keep in mind that this is still dev branch and it will most likely eat your kittens, burn your house and do other unforeseeable things!

There are several DB updates which will take a looong time to complete (item table). Please be patient. If updates fail due to server timeout, you will need to apply the failed updates manually.

a while ago i was told that connecting from Hz dev to zap/osada was to be avoided since basically it could break the whole fediverse. is that still the case, or has that also been unfrozen?

my connections to other (non-dev) hubzilla contacts are zot, but my (attempted) connection to @Mike Macgirvin ⚡ says zot6. so i assume that the prefered protocol is zot6, which falls back to zot if that isn't available.

re. the not-private comment to a public post:

isn't that similar to the issue with a private post to a public forum that came up a short while ago? if i post to a public forum it's implied, in my understanding, that my post will also be public, no matter if it's private in re. to other recipients of that same post.

if i comment to a public post i would assume that my comment will also be public. if i don't want that i'd have to write a private post to the recipient in which i can quote the public post.

i'm sure he does, and will keep doing so for the foreseeable future. as far as Zot and Zot6 are concerned a lasting solution can probably be found; but when it comes to other protocols that develop in their own ways and don't care about others, i'm afraid that's a movable target not easily or permanently to fix.

Hm. Ok - I see. I guess you mean that the icons are not displayed? They are displayed in Chromium, but not Firefox. Now that ... is an unwelcome challenge besides the horizontal menu issue that I am still strugling with, despite the hint to flexbox.
I am redoing the whole page but this is a real blocker.

If I want to implement a network of school districts each with their own hub, is there a Hubzilla "standard" way to whitelist the authorized hubs or otherwise restrict the directory to a well-know set of hubs?

You can configure hubzilla as an isolated diectory server. I tested this about 3 weeks ago and it works. However, someone with an 'outsider' account can log into your network using remote authentication. And probably vice-versa. So it's not a walled network.

There are sections in the admin provided to block by domain, etc, which may limit access.

If you want a totally isolated experience it would take some tinkering.

Thank you! That gives me a good place to start. I just might have to have the lads in our lab tinker a bit as we move forward. I see some value in K-12 education in walling off the network, or at least having a private network for everyone and a public network for for authorized individuals.

It might be useful contribution to the community if we can sort it out.

This is precisely the use case I promoted years ago as the kind of niche market that Hubzilla could satisfy better than other existing solutions, and my prediction is that by doing so, people would begin to see the bigger picture of what it could do. A school system is a great environment for Hubzilla. Each school is often fairly independent, and should have control over its hub (data, membership, policies); yet schools are interconnected in many ways, for example in the fact that often parents have children that attend different schools. Hubzilla would allow them to seamlessly authenticate to each school's hub to communicate with teachers and access information. When their child goes from middle to high school, that child should be able to take their "account" (that is, their identity) with them. Any connections and relationships they've made need not be lost just because they move schools. A major selling point is that since children are so involved, it is paramount that their privacy be protected and access controls be in place to ensure that their data is neither leaked nor sold for profit.

I could go on about the many ways a school system would benefit from using Hubzilla, as well as the ways the Hubzilla project would benefit from an such invested, dedicated and professional community. Suffice it to say that I wish you the best of luck @{larry@start.hubzilla.org}. Keep asking questions and persevere. There is solid gold here, but it needs time to understand it.

@RockyIII - I don't know many schools who didn't buy into the centralized commercial service model of "free" services. But I've talked with several different groups in numerous sectors who are sorry they did and now have a belly ache. So, I'm not sure that the current lack of a functioning install is all that indicative of anything.

But i´m still looking for the "real reality" battle proof of HZ in a school.
I have a hard time to talk teachers (or so) into useing HZ, and finaly they ask: "Who is using it allready". that´s why I asked Andrew

In our use cases, the applications are not for teachers and students.

We are working with technology staff and administrators in school districts.  They routinely communicate, collaborate and exchange sensitive data
  (1) between themselves within a district for operational purposes,
  (2) with other school districts for sharing information and best practices,
  (3) with state departments of education for regulatory reporting and
  (4) with education technology vendors in order to properly configure applications.

Today, the IT environment tends to be archaic.  They use a lot of spreadsheets, email and shared drives like Google Drive.  I've seen private student information and admin login credentials shared in the clear via email. Un-encrypted spreadsheets are everywhere.  There is no way to audit when and where data is exposed.  And the general staff awareness of privacy and security is poor.

We are looking into ways to make school district collaboration more secure, more operationally efficient and auditable for regulatory compliance.  We also want to give them the option of housing their own data within their own school district resources yet have the ability to share subsets of their data in a secure, controlled manner.

I think this is an even better use case for Hubzilla! I have a similar aim and plan for Hubzilla in the context of local but "federated" grass roots community groups. This is an area with some GREAT potential for Hubzilla.
