I tried to delete a channel and reimport it. The import did finish successful, but the channel does not appear. It seems, that Hubzilla did not delete the channel data from the database and the second import failes without notice. This is at least confusing...

Why not notice, that the channel is reactivated and just keep the data?

However the main problem is, that the user does not get the proper feedback. Hubzilla only says, import done. But the channel is not available. I am able to look around, and find the problem on my own, but an other user is not able to do the same. And for me it was an hour of work...

It is ok to have the information left, that the channel was deleted. I think the user needs an information that the import was not successfull, as it was not successful. I may look into this tomorrow to give a proper feedback. However i did no development for a very long time...

Thankfully, things have calmed down quite a bit since then. The violent crime rate is now about average for a city in California, half that of SF, and one quarter of the crime rate in Oakland.

!Hubzilla Development Support Forum I'm investigating Hubzilla because I'm interested in recreating some communities that were shutdown on reddit recently (/r/beertrading, for example). Some of those communities had 20,000+ or more members. Has Hubzilla ever been tested at that scale yet? If so, anything I need to now to ensure that my hub can scale that large? What's the largest community forum on Hubzilla now?

No, it has not been tested at that scale (unless the people that did so were completely reclusive and off-grid and never contributed to the development community). According to https://the-federation.info/hubzilla statistics, which are not "scientific" but probably reasonable, the largest hub contributing statistics only has about 250 channels. I'm guessing you will need a pretty beefy server to handle 20000+ channels.

Don't forget, however, that Hubzilla is not a centralized platform. There is no reason that all the participants must be on a single hub. Ideally, all those people are distributed amongst several/many hubs and they interact with one another and share data via the forum channel ("beertrading") using the decentralized access control that makes Hubzilla unique.

As I understand it, reddit doesn't have the capacity to monitor the sales in their sub-reddits to make sure they're complying with the law, and doesn't want to be held liable for profiting from illegal alcohol sales.

I mentioned HubZilla over at the Nexcloud boards, and it seems like it would be possible to allow federated file-sharing?

Nextcloud uses ActivtyPub and SabreDAV for its federated file sharing features, and for example Pydio (another private cloud system) has implemented the protocol.

It looks like this could be a low hanging fruit for Hubzilla as well?

!Hubzilla Development I'm finally digging into the Articles system to see what kinds of modifications I can make to it. As per usual, I have a few questions. :smiley:

If I wanted to modify the elements inside of the article content, would I need to effectively override the markup template? I noticed that currently, articles use cards.tpl for get_markup_template, I'm a little curious as to whether creating an articles.tpl at some point might make sense for article-specific customizations. I'm trying to figure out how to remove the view article / view summary link.

Another thing I'd love to figure out is how to display different views depending on whether I'm looking at the article index, or the article display. I know that Hubzilla generally treats these two things as the same when it comes to posts / the stream, is there a sane way to separate the two? I think I want my index to be a grid of thumbnails and links, whereas the article display would be the full-length content. As a workaround, it might be possible to just create a plugin and set up a different index view at a different URL path, but that might be a bit of a hacky experience.

It looks to me like they are missing the bigger picture. They just want to make another centralized social networking platform that will ultimately suffer the same problems Facebook has. The fact that their discussion forum is on Facebook is a pretty bad sign.

To me "business model" "privacy" and "social network" sounds like a contradiction in terms. If invading user's privacy is not your business model, then what is?

@Sophie you could build a privacy respecting platform where people run instances for their friends. Everyone on a instance could chip in to cover the server costs, no need to sell any data. You could the even invent cool names for the components of the platform, like a instance could be called a Hub....

While I can agree with the saying "If you're not paying for it, you're the product" when it comes to Facebook et al, I don't usually say it because the expression doesn't hold for quite a lot of things I use myself. What would you reply if a friend said it about Wikipedia, your favourite Linux distro, Mozilla Firefox, Hubzilla, OpenStreetMap or whatever free and open source software or service you can use without paying for it? Of course you can contribute and donate to them (do that!), but you still can use them without being the product.

I thought the ZOT universe could benefit from this competition in terms of visibility and even money, although the competition itself doesn't make much sense!

I'm trying to add an option to filter "active connections" on the connections page, since as of now you have All | New | Blocked | Ignored | Archived | Hidden .

I'm just adding the "Active connections" option, but maybe this should be the default.

Where should I make the push request? I'm starting from Master branch.

Maybe I need some lessons to use git a bit better.

I've committed my changes to my github fork. Now I see that my previous pull request (italian translation) has also my modifications on the connections bits. Is there a way to spit the two ? Maybe @Manuel (con la inmensa minoría...) knows how to manage it?

if you did well the step of the git add, to make visible the changes, you don't have to: everything will go to its site. Anyway, some of those who have permission in gthub (Mike, Mario, I don't know if any more) will check your pull request and, if they see a problem, they will tell you to solve it.

Use different branches, one per pull request you intend to do. All commits you push to a branch show up in the pull request, even those pushed after you opened it.

Now I'ma bit stuck.
I made changes on a couple of files and, for good reasons, Mario rejected the commit since it has to be pushed against dev branch.
But I made the changes in my master branch, and I'm not sure how to proceed.

there are 2 different ways notifications are displayed: 1) network activity and 2) notices
in the first case they are shorter and to me more useful:
Who did it
What did and on what kind of content
When

while the second has many infos that are repeated:

Who did it
recipient, who did it, What did and on what kind of content
When

the result is that the interesting part usualli gets hidden by the ellipses..

It would be nice to apply the first format also to the second type of notifications.

Also a visual difference between comments, likes, new posts could be useful, as the ability to filter them on the flyight, as we have now for "new posts".

What do you think?

I "rebooted" the https://github.com/anaqreon/hubzilla-vagrant repo that I've discussed before in this forum. There were some annoyances with the hub root folder synced between the host and virtual machine that led me to abandon that configuration. Also, I did not like how large the hubzilla-vagrant repo size was due to the initial hub snapshot I was including, so I started fresh with no Hubzilla code included. Instead, the Vagrant provisioning script clones from the official Hubzilla repos but automatically installs the database tables and uses a preexisting .htconfig.php hub config file so that you can immediately register and create your admin channel without going through the hub setup process. See the repo Readme for details.

I'm running 3.2RC1 now, and I received a very polite email from my hub about update 1205 failing. I don't see anything in my hub, apache, or mysql error logs and so far the site appears to be running smoothly.

The Hubzilla developers released update 1205 recently,
but when I tried to install it, something went terribly wrong.
This needs to be fixed soon and it requires human intervention.
Please contact a project developer if you can not figure out how to
fix it on your own. My database might be invalid.

The error message is 'Update 1205 failed. See error logs.'.

Check in your item table if this changes are present:

ALTER TABLE item 
 DROP INDEX item_private,
 ADD INDEX uid_item_private (uid, item_private),
 ADD INDEX item_wall (item_wall),
 ADD INDEX item_pending_remove_changed (item_pending_remove, changed)

If not, run this query manualy from the mysql command line.
