Of course, right now I'm looking at this wondering why it ISN'T a column in the table (except for needing to deal with deletions).

Thinking about this a bit further, microtime() would leave very little tolerance for clock drift - not that 2 seconds is much.

I've known VMs to drift up to ten minutes in the course of a day, depending on how loaded the host is.
