On this day Dec 4 Zotlabs|Hubzilla 1.0 was released four years ago in 2015.
Though Hubzilla (then still without the Zotlabs|) was a fork of Red Matrix (deprecated) which was a fork of
Friendica and therefore is way older in reality, let's hold on for a moment and celebrate.
Already Friendica (released in 2012) put a heightened development emphasis on privacy, data autonomy, decentralization and federation to other services and protocols such as Diaspora*. Red Matrix / Hubzilla took it to the next level with a truly server independent, nomadic identity. This meant the first incarnation of Zot, which superseded Friendica's DRFN. Friendica continues to be developed by an independent community, while Hubzilla evolved into a Zotlabs project.
Today the Zotlabs Suite consists of Zotlabs|Hubzilla and it's slimlined forks Zotlabs|Osada and Zotlabs|Zap. Zotlabs|Hubzilla is a whole pubishing platform offering a wide array of possibilities, such as file storage, web pages, wiki, articles, cards and in addition social networking with optional federation towards ActivityPub, Diaspora* and Ostatus. All these features are powered by the Zot protocol and it's nomadic identity features, while maintaining fine grained access control for everything.
The new arrivals are dedicated social networking tools, Osada supporting ActivityPub and Zap being native Zot6 only (Zot6 reference implementation).
As of now Zot6 is being ported from Zap to Zotlabs|Hubzilla, which will bring many exciting changes, such as more efficiency within Zot itself, but also a better compatibility when federating towards ActivityPub, Diaspora* and OStatus. Zotlabs|Hubzilla 4.0 is to be expected in Q1 2019.
But for now: Happy birthday @
zotlabs.org | Hubzilla and many thanks to @
Mike Macgirvin for inventing the whole Zotlabs Suite and Zot.
We really do value and appreciate your dedication and endurance. And while Hubzilla has become a community project, thank you very much for sticking with us and helping out. And bringing us Zot6.
For anyone who would like to thank Mike by directly buying him a #coldOne or supporting Hubzilla as a project:
